I used a Braun Linear shaver since 1994, and was doubtful of the rotary shavers. After researching on Consumer Reports, I deceided to jump ship. The 5822XL is rated #1 on Consumer Reports, and now, I know why. There was no noticeable skin irritation; which was my concern. It gave me a closer shave than the old Braun, and in 1/2 the time! The lack of the familiar”buzzzzzzz,” replaced by a barely audible “Whirrr,” was refreshing. I am VERY pleased with it. This one’s a keeper!

Most men try to find a happy compromise between a close shave and a comfortable shave, especially if they have a coarse, wiry beard. I fit into that category, especially on my neck under my chin. The hairs grow in every direction, and it is difficult to get a close shave there without a lot of irritation and nicks.

This Norelco provides an extremely comfortable shave, but for me, not a close shave. This makes it less desirable to me. It might make a fine choice for someone with a lighter beard, or someone with less shaving experience, or someone who has a disability that makes it difficult to shave. Men in these categories would find the Norelco’s comfortable shave to be a winning factor.

I’m also not pleased with the cleaning requirements. My old Remington linear-style had a foil head that pops off, making the foil easy to clean under water, exposing the cutting head, which is also easy to rinse and brush under water. This Norelco shaving head, on the other hand, contains both the foil and the cutting blades. You must physically pop out the cutting blades to be able to access the back side of the foil for cleaning. Further, the instructions tell you to clean it in alcohol, then use a lubricating oil on the mechanism afterwards. This is considerably more work.

As I wasn’t experiencing a satisfactory shave with this razor, I tried for the first time a pre-electric shave conditioner. This conditioner has definitely helped, and allowed me to give the razor a two-star rating instead of only one-star. If you aren’t pleased with the quality of your electric shave, I highly recommend you try a pre-shave conditioner.

If you suffer from acne, shaving can be a painful experience and possibly even a blood bath. Follow theses simple rules to make shaving easier and not aggravate your acne.

Do try an electric shaver or if you prefer a blade, use a sharp razor with only one or two blades. Shaving too close irritates already sensitive skin and can make the problem worse.

Do shave in the direction that the hair grows. This is not as close a shave as shaving against the hair however much less irritating to the skin. Use only short strokes with light pressure for least irritation

Do soften your whiskers before you shave. Wash your face gently with warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Then leave a warm washer on your face for a minute or two, to really soften the hair. Alternately you might like to try shaving in the shower. All that steam and warn water really softens your beard

Do go retro and use a mild old fashioned soap or shaving cream and brush. If you apply the shave soap or cream with a brush in circular motion, then let it sit for a couple of minute the hair softens and the soap or cream puts a thin film on the skin, making it much easier to shave with out adding razor burn to the irritation of your skin. The motion of the brush has a gentle exfoliant action which also helps to prevent acne.

Do rinse your face thoroughly and make sure you remove all the lather as leaving traces behind can clog the pores of your skin and lead to further outbreaks

Do avoid shaving when you can. If you can avoid shaving for a day or two when your breakouts are really bad, do so. A day or two with out any further irritation can be useful.

Do use and antibacterial solution or gel after shaving. This will prevent bacteria from easily entering your open pores after shaving.

Don’t use a 3 or 4 blade razor. Multiple blade razors lift the hair and cut below the level of the skin for a closer shave. This can lead to ingrown hairs and further inflammation problems

Don’t shave against the direction of the hair growth. This a really important pattern to break if you suffer from acne breakouts. Only ever shave in the same direction the hair grows to avoid adding razor burn or ingrown hairs to your acne problem.

Never shave with out softening the hair first. The softer the hair the less irritation to your skin. No matter how rushed you are always take time to soften the whiskers and use a good shaving cream or soap. Shaving in the shower is a really good time saver and kind to your skin.

Also, you should also wash the beard with soap and lever 2000 with a Buf-Puf. This will help prevent ingrown hairs, skin, and have in their skin. This must be taken twice a day.

For a long term solution to razor bumps, laser hair removal is perhaps the best option. Electrolysis and laser hair removal should be considered, if all else fails. Some visits to a clinic for laser hair removal mayeliminate shaving.
