At 40 y/o I have shaved with the standard safety razor, rotory electric and foil electrics with varying degrees of success. For reference/comparison purposes, I have a fairly angular jaw line and what I would consider a medium density beard. As far as razors, I do always tend to get the closest shaves with the wet blade razors. However, I prefer the convenience of electrics.

The rotary electrics are just absolutely awful for me which I believe is mostly due to my angular jaw. I have found the foil electrics to work best for me and had standardized on the Braun 7526 Syncro shaver. That razor, new out of the box, gave an outstanding cut and I loved the feeling of the clean razor after the cleaning cycle. However, while the Braun ran exceptionally smooth when new, I found it doesn’t take long for them to deteriorate into a rattling, vibrating, noisy razor with a mediocre cut. Also the or so for the cleaning solution starts to add considerably to the cost of ownership. I had used Braun razors for over 10 years.

When it came time to replace my current 7526, I was astonished at the pricing for the latest/greatest Braun system. This led me to search out an alternate razor which I found in the Panasonic ES8228 Vortex razor which I purchased for less than half the cost of the current Braun.

I have now owned the Panasonic for about 8 months and have been very pleased. At first I found it somewhat awkward to hold, but that was only because I was accustomed to the heft the Braun. The Braun is a significantly larger and heavier razor than the Panasonic. I would compare the Panasonic to a tight, high revving, Japanese sport bike. The Panasonic’s RPM’s are very high, it has a much higher pitch than the Braun which operates at a lower RPM, yet is very smooth and does not vibrate.

I prefer a very smooth cut so it does take me some time to shave. I usually spend anywhere from 3-5 minutes with the razor, working the angles of my jaw until it is baby butt smooth when rubbed in each direction. Again, not quite as smooth as a wet shave, but very good. I have found I can get approximately 5-7 shaves from a single charge.

The razor can also be used in the shower with shaving gel, which I have found gives a near wet razor cut. The only caution I have is that the razor is very slippery when wet. The contoured handle has a tendency to pop right out of your hand when covered in shaving cream.

Interestingly enough, while the razor came with a clean in place base, I do not use it for cleaning but only as a charging stand and place to store the razor. Since the razor is waterproof, I usually just squirt a little liquid soap on the blades and run the entire razor under the faucet with the blades running. The razor comes out sparkling clean. The only disadvantage is that I don’t have the antiseptic clean smell that I got from the Braun cleaning solution tank.

So, basically it’s so far so good with this one.

This system uses a water/ detergent cleansing process instead of alcohol like my Braun 360 shaver. The Panasonic WES035P Cleaning Cartridges are for sale on-line at several web sites for between .00 to .00 per pack of three, plus shipping.

The only negative is the cleaning system. Cleaning cartridges are very expensive, for what you get and how often they must be replaced. But if used wet, with lather, the electric razor sort of cleans itself.

Because I don’t like to taking stuff back, too much of a hassle, I decided to research this purchase. I read the reviews, weighted costs and options then decided to buy the Panasonic ES8228S. When I got it I immediately charged it up and shaved. I didn’t know what to expect. I was immediately happy with the shave and my wife and I thought that it was as close as a blade (mach 3). When I wet shaved, with Gillette gel, I thought it was closer than the blade. However, I still have to go over my multi-direction neck hairs several times and I can’t say the shaver is quicker than a blade. Also the cleaner is cool, but it is long and loud, and when the charging cycle it over it flashes a bright light…all this is quite annoying if you bath room is connected to you bed room. Over all I love the shave and I love to shave with it and I don’t get any irritation.
